North and southbound rail service is
provided to Sheldon rail customers by Union Pacific railroad.
Leaders in agriculture, recreational vehicles, and the trucking industry
represent the diversity and extensive use of railroads in Sheldon.
Those same industries receive east/west rail service from IC&E Railroad.
The existing network of roads leading
into and throughout Sheldon creates virtually no traffic jams and easy
access to homes, business and services. The network consists of
highly maintained county roads, State Highway 60 serving north/south
traffic, and Federal Highway 18 that accommodates traffic east and west.
State Highway 60 has become a 4-lane expressway with three interchanges
into the Sheldon city limits by 2006. This highway construction project will change goods distribution routes
between Omaha, Nebraska and Minneapolis, Minnesota resulting in improved
commerce and travel.
A level 2, commercial airport also
serves Sheldon. The airport is maintained at the highest levels
featuring a 4199’ concrete runway, unicom radio service, VOR, a
non-directional beacon, and a mechanic on duty. More than 20 private
aircraft are housed at this facility. Jet traffic is part of the
customer base at Sheldon’s regional airport. Private flying
lessons are available. A courtesy van is
available at the airport for
transportation into the community.
